Kathputli is a traditional art form, traditional to the central state of Rajasthan, India. It is the most popular form of Indian puppetry. Some historians believe that the Kathputli art form is over 1500 years old. It is believed that somewhere 1500 years ago, tribal Rajasthani Bhat community started the use of Kathputli as string marionette art and it is in their love for tradition that art of Kathputli survived the test of time. Tradition of Kathputli is based on folk tales and stories.
This is said to have originated a thousand years ago when the Bhat community began to practice this art. I have worked with a member of the Bhatt family that carries on this art form even today.
This is a set of 2 puppets, 1 male and 1 female wearing marron coloured clothing with the traditional Bandhej Bandhani outfits that are upcycled from Indian sarees. The female puppet is wearing a dress, and the male puppet is wearing pants. Many believe they represent a Queen and King and the puppeteers design a story from religious texts, scriptures or their imagination.
By buying this, you are supporting the Bhatt family to keep this art form going. They are finding it hard to sustain this art form and it may not be passed down to the next generation.
A good educational toy and a good way to keep your children close to the Indian culture or learn something new if you are not Indian. A good children's gift.
They are about 52 cm (20.47 in) in height and about 12 cm (4.72 in) in width across the chest.
